Logistics and Planning

*Class is every Tuesday and Thursday. Wednesday will be our Open Labs. However, next Thursday will be the open lab, and Wednesday we will have class.

*Working in teams is part of Project-Based learning. It gives an opportunity for deep conversations between teachers.

*The book “Reinventing Project-Based Learning” shares stories from around the world, and moves through the whole arc of different projects.

“The Private Eye” Curriculum and Stamps

1. Look at stamps from around the world. Start to compare stamps (numbers, words, pictures). Get the students interested!

2. Keep students thinking by stopping there and letting students think about it over night (making the anticipatory set).

3. Think about how “stamps” could go deeper and expand across curriculums.

4. See above for tonight assignment regarding stamps (assignment #1).

Brainstorming Using Concept Mapping Tools

http://www.bubbl.us/

1. Push start, use zoom button to enlarge, use enter and tab to build web.

2. Learners share projects and skills needed to complete projects.

3. Motivation to use sight is that web can be used on learners own time. Also, you are able to embedded it into your blogs or on anthor page, and it is free.

4. What is the result? Sense of accomplishment, different approach to learning, new skills, and being apart of the problem solving process.

Classrooms@work/tools@hand

http://www.netc.org (video of project-based learning and integrated instruction, standard based). Also linked in Wiki under resources. If you wanted to replicate project, everything is on the website.

What made this project work? Teacher introduced concepts, and then in the later stages the topics were embedded in the larger projects. The students collaborated together and took on different roles. Teacher pulled in authentic disciplines. Specific tasks were identified for people and job assignments were precise.

What would the problem solving process of inequity be? Vary types of grouping. Incorporate processing by having student reflect in journal or on a blog where teacher and other kids could respond. Journals can also help capture what is going on throughout the project.

Effective Projects

Iearn.com - site that focuses on real world projects

Reinvented project: Mingling at the Renaissance Ball (see slides)

Interact Units might be a place to start. (Crista)

Wiki

What is a Wiki? Wiki is many to many. There is a home page, and you are able to build from there. When you want to interact with the wiki, just go to edit page. Individual page is a place where only you write. You can also add pages to your own page.

The biggest difference with the Wiki: easy editing, easy to take apart of, at the bottom click on Wiki settings to show pages and you can see who added or edited pages (good management tool). Add google maps and time cameras.

Easy to make as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

Pardon me, but I didn't realize that changing the settings (like the Skin) while logged in to my page on the class Wiki does not just change mine, but the whole Wiki, since it's just one Wiki. I can't remember what skin was used before.
